Podcasts

Since the beginning of 2014, I’ve been a rampant podcaster. Indeed, that’s where you may well know me from. I know what you’re thinking – surely, Tony, you’ve got a handy link to every podcast appearance you’ve made over the years?

Well, you’re in luck. Below you can find my podcast history so far, broken down by whether active, non-active or guest podcast appearances. Enjoy!

ACTIVE

Authorised Podcast Only

(2021-) (8 episodes / 5 appearances)

To celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary, I decided to create a podcast to celebrate Alias, one of my favourite TV shows which I have written about at length over the years on this site.

The same format as I devised on The X-Cast is used here to go through each episode one by one and it has so far been fun to deep dive with a range of podcasters and explore this show. I won’t be on every episode but it’s going to be huge fun talking some of my favourite television episodes of all time.

Make It So: A Star Trek: Universe Podcast

(2019-) (41 episodes / 21 appearances)

Much as I enjoy listening to some of them, recap podcasts haven’t been something I’ve done all that often for shows out in the moment – The X-Cast & The Time Is Now are largely more historical. I’ve made an exception for Star Trek: Picard, my most anticipated TV series of 2020, as a huge TV fan. This one is designed to get on mic soon after watching the newest episode and unpick everything from port to starboard. Make It So is a fun deep dive into new Star Trek.

I have since handed the series over to co-host Kurt North, who is joined by Luke Winch, but I will appear semi-regularly as a guest.

Trek FM’s Primitive Culture

(2017-) (112 episodes / 36 appearances)

A show which taps into my other great television love – Star Trek. Having found the Trek FM network via friend Zach Moore and guesting on his show Standard Orbit, I for a while wanted to create a show all about history & culture in relation to Trek, and once I heard the learned Duncan Barrett on Trek FM’s philosophy show Meta Treks, I knew he’d be the ideal flight partner for this one. I messaged him, ideas flew, and the rest is future history.

I have since (as of May 2018) stepped down as a co-host, but Primitive Culture is a thrill to research and record, and I am excited to appear semi-regularly as a guest to talk Trek.

Podcast-616: A Marvel Universe Podcast

(2021-) (42 episodes / 6 appearances)

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands, it only seemed fitting for We Made This to develop its own dedicated podcast series, and Podcast-616 thus far has been a project where I have operated more as executive producer with rotating teams of podcasters hosting and guesting, discussing MCU projects new and old.

I imagine I will pop up irregularly on this but my hand will always be, Kevin Feige-style, pulling the strings in the background.

Rarely Going: An Animated Star Trek Podcast

(2021-) (30 episodes / 3 appearances)

The intention for We Made This is to expand and cover all of the new Star Trek series in the modern era and Rarely Going is a show I developed with Craig McKenzie to cover the newest animated show Lower Decks, with the intention of expanding to cover Star Trek: Prodigy and even the older Animated Series.

I handed over full control of this one to Craig after the opening episodes and he will co-host future episodes with Luke Winch, but I will likely pop up from time to time here.

Reel Talk: The We Made This Movie Show

(2021-) (30 episodes / 4 appearances)

As part of the expansion of my podcast network, We Made This, I created Reel Talk in 2021 as a dedicated podcast about cinema that anyone could pick up and record an episode of, whether it being a guest host of a show on the network or a guest of their choosing. The criteria is that we have to discuss a new film in the main, unless we’re doing anniversary episodes, and that we focus on one picture at a time.

It’s great to have a film show to dip in and out of with different guests and hosts, as both host and producer.

Scheduled Programming: The We Made This TV Podcast

(2021-) (7 episodes / 1 appearance)

As part of the expansion of my podcast network, We Made This, I created Scheduled Programming in 2021 as a dedicated podcast, much like Reel Talk, about TV that anyone could pick up and record an episode of, whether it being a guest host of a show on the network or a guest of their choosing. The criteria is that we have to discuss a new TV show in the main and that we focus on one series at a time.

It’s great to have a TV show to dip in and out of with different guests and hosts, as both host and producer.

with Matt Latham

The Time Is Now: A Millennium Podcast

(2019-) (78 episodes / 12 appearances)

After launching The X-Cast, my aim from the beginning was always to produce a spin-off podcast about Millennium, Chris Carter’s other 90’s series; an incredibly dark, fascinating three-season experiment in pre-millennial angst focused around Lance Henriksen’s criminal profiler Frank Black. It is, on its day, on a par with or perhaps even better than The X-Files, and it’s massively under-discussed on podcasts. It took a few years of planning and development, but The Time Is Now finally began in 2019.

This is one I handed over to X-Cast guest & Patron, Kurt North, to run as showrunner and he’s done a great job putting the show together so far. I appear sporadically on the episodes of the show I love the most.

The X-Cast: An X-Files Podcast

(2015-present) (559 episodes / 183 appearances)

The show that has become my bread and podcasting butter, based on my eternal love for The X-Files. Started at the end of 2015 as the show was about to be revived, The X-Cast has steadily grown into its own community of podcasters, bloggers and fans working together to appreciate their favourite show. It’s now as much their show as it is mine and its arguably my most successful podcast endeavour to date. I have since stepped down as show runner as of October 2020 but I remain executive producer behind the scenes.

There will eventually be an end to this one, once we’ve exhausted the show, but we’re many years away from that yet…

You Have Been Watching

(2021-) (6 episodes / 6 appearances)

A show born out of a discussion with a podcaster who came to We Made This through someone else, You Have Been Watching feels like a show I was destined in some ways to always do.

I love sitcoms and British comedies in general. Always have, always will. I grew up watching this stuff so finding someone as like minded as Rob Turnbull in how much they not just love them, but love to dig deep and analyse them, is thrilling. We’re having great  discussions with this and while due to time and prep, they won’t be weekly and air in ‘seasons’ at different points, the conversations I believe will be worth it.

NON-ACTIVE

Black Hole Cinema

(2014-2017) (63 episodes / 49 appearances)

My very first podcast endeavour, back at the start of 2014. It began with me and not even a mic, rather just a computer, babbling about new movies (at the time). Soon, friends started dripping on in segments, before joining me for full episodes, and eventually co-hosting or even hosting episodes themselves. Some of these won’t have great audio or editing quality, very rough around the edges DIY podcasting, but they’ll always have a special place in my heart as my first ventures into the audio world.

Will the show ever return? Probably not, though I have said that before. Mind you, it’s taken nearly four years to realise the title is probably rampantly egotistical!

NOTE: These episodes are no longer available online but can be made available on request.

Blair Witch Minute

(2020-) (6 episodes / 6 appearances)

Having discovered the Movies by Minutes project over 2020, I decided to try my hand at a  series of them through one of my favourite horror films of all time, The Blair Witch Project. Experimenting with the form on The X-Cast with Fight the Future Minute, it has been a lot of fun to go deep on Blair Witch and break the film down so far with a range of guests for clusters of episodes, covering a minute at a time.

There is a certain intensity in covering a film in this depth which means Blair Witch Minute is taking time, but I hope to curate steadily a genuinely enjoyable podcast project about this great film. This show is currently on hiatus.

Motion Pictures

(2019-2020) (22 episodes / 22 appearances)

After my initial forays into podcasting about film with Black Hole Cinema and Pick a Flick! (see below), I had come to miss discussing cinema on a regular basis and after appearing on various film podcasts, I reached out to my friend Carl Sweeney of The Movie Palace & The X-Cast and we joined forces to develop a film podcast built around a deeper conversation about cinema in the wake of a new movie each episode, as opposed to just reviewing new films, podcasts which are ten a penny.

We were pleased with the results, managing to have some interesting, erudite and fun conversations. The show came to an end in 2020 as we focused on other projects.

Pick a Flick!

(2015-2016) (40 episodes / 20 appearances)

Originally a spin-off project from Black Hole Cinema, the aim here was to develop a show based more specifically on audience feedback. They would choose a film over social media and myself & guests would view and discuss it. The format took in several diverse movies each week and the beauty of this was the ability to talk older pictures, where BHC was designed around new material. Pick a Flick! to some degree feels like me still figuring out what I want to do with film podcasting, and again I experimented with guest hosts and different ideas.

One reason I’ll always love PAF–aside from the concept of listeners picking films to discuss–is that it truly helped expand my horizons with guests, bringing on people I hadn’t worked with before & building lots of new contacts along the way.

NOTE: These episodes are no longer available online but can be made available on request.

The Sanctuary: A Star Trek Politics & Economics Podcast

(2020-) (6 episodes / 6 appearances)

Intended originally as part of an arm of We Made This called We Made Treks, that never came to fruition, The Sanctuary I consider an unofficial spin-off from Primitive Culture, taking a very similar approach to analysing Star Trek but focusing directly on the politics & economics within the series. The conversations so far have been wide ranging and deeply thought provoking and I’m looking forward to having more.

The podcast started in 2020 but has since been on pause until I have the time to devote to it again, which will hopefully be some point in the future.

Always Hold On to Smallville (2016-present) (2 appearances)

Unofficially regarded as the sister podcast to The X-Cast, given they launched around the same time with a similar format, Always Hold on to Smallville sees my friend Zach Moore going through classic superhero series Smallville one episode a time, with some DC comics stopoffs on the way.

I had never seen Smallville before Zach invited me on but its always fun podcasting with Zach, even if Smallville isn’t–being brutally honest–ever going to trouble my favourite shows of all time list!

34 – Suspect

2019

Character Unlock (2016-2021) (2 appearances)

Originally devised as a spin-off to Failed Critics, part of the Failed Media network of podcasts, Character Unlock has now branched off to become its own beast. A video game podcast created by my friend Andrew Brooker and his old mate John Miller, it’s a relaxed, down to earth listen (much like FC).

These guys have forgotten more about games than I’ll ever know, but it’s been much fun shooting the breeze with them on a couple of occasions.

2016

3 – The Horror… The Horror

Discussing Resident Evil and horror in video games

Don’t Say the ‘C’ Word (2020) (1 appearance)

Also part of my We Made This network, Don’t Say the ‘C’ Word is a podcast created by Mark Adams during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown talking about anything *but* coronavirus.

A lovely idea, which aired daily during the 2020 lockdown, and one I was very glad to help facilitate.

2020

27 – One Foot in the Grave

with Mark Adams

Discussing the sitcom One Foot in the Grave.

Failed Critics (2012-2018) (19 appearances)

One of the first shows I had the pleasure of guesting on, Failed Critics has been among the best DIY film shows on the web, and arguably deserves a larger following. Hosted by Owen Hughes & Steve Norman, it’s conversational, down to earth and always a great laugh to be on – like chatting movies down the pub with mates.

FC has sort of now drawn to a close but returns for the occasional new episode. We can only hope one day it’ll rise like a phoenix from the flames…

Fandomentals (2020-present) (2 appearances)

It was a real pleasure to be invited onto a podcast by the gentleman that is Harley called Fandomentals, where he discusses fan interests with a wide variety of people.

He has been kind enough to talk to me about both of my books, twice, and hopefully the trend will continue!

2020

11 – Non-Fiction Writing

with Harley

Talking about my book, Myth-Building in Modern Media.

2021

22 – Star Trek

with Harley

Talking about my book, Star Trek, History and Us.

Frame to Frame (2020-present) (1 appearance)

Another podcast on my network We Made This, hosted by my Between the Notes co-host Sean Wilson and his friend Andy Williams, Frame to Frame is a relaxed and conversational film show with two pals who pick a film theme and then choose a film each around it to discuss.

I was pleased to be among the first experimentation with guests on the show and hopefully will pop up to join them from time to time.

2021

54 – The Fugitive & Clear and Present Danger

with Sean Wilson & Andy Williams

Discussing the above films under the theme “films with Harrison Ford pointing angrily”

Missing Frames (2016-) (1 appearance)

Part of The Nerd Party podcast network, Missing Frames is a great film podcast in which Shawn Eastridge discusses the films people should have seen but haven’t yet, and does it on the day they first watch.

Shawn was a really fun guy to record with and since I have loads of films I probably should have seen yet haven’t, I hope I’ll pop up on this again down the road…

2020

78 – Jaws

with Shawn Eastridge

Discussing the above 1975 Steven Spielberg classic.

MovieVersaries (2021-present) (1 appearance)

Part of the We Made This stable, MovieVersaries was the brainchild of Australian podcaster Bo Nicholson who wanted to find a way to celebrate classic movie anniversaries.

It’s a great show with some fantastic, insightful conversations on classic cinema, and Bo was kind enough to let me air an episode recorded back in 2018, and never aired, for a podcast idea that never got off the ground. Hopefully won’t be my only appearance!

2021

6 – Kicking and Screaming @25 (ish)

with Lee Hutchison

Talking about the 1995 Noah Baumbach drama.

Observing the Pattern (2020-present) (3 appearances)

Also part of my We Made This network, Observing the Pattern is dedicated to exploring the TV series Fringe, episode by episode, in the style of shows such as The X-Cast or The Time is Now.

Originally created by Andrew Brooker, and now being show ran by Luke Winch, this is an intelligent and fun podcast which goes into depth on a great TV series. I’ve had fun in the two discussions I’ve had on it so far and I look forward to appearing on episodes down the line.

2020

2 – Pilot

with Andrew Brooker

Analysis of Season 1, Episode 1.

5 – The Arrival

with Andrew Brooker

Analysis of Season 1, Episode 4.

2021

65 – Lysergic Acid Diathlemyde

with Luke Winch

Analysis of Season 3, Episode 19.

Pick a Disc (2019-present) (2 appearances)

Part of my network, We Made This, Pick a Disc is developed by my old friend, Matt Latham, and is a sort-of spin-off from Pick a Flick!, as Latham developed and toyed with this idea back when that podcast was in production. In it, Latham talks to various music fans and artists about a favourite album, unpicking why they love it.

Not the sort of show I would normally appear on, it’s nonetheless a really good podcast for music fans and podcasters.

2019

11 – Lost Horizons: Lemon Jelly

with Matt Latham

Discussing the album ‘Lost Horizons’.

2020

32 – Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Soundtrack

with Matt Latham

Discussing the soundtrack album to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Pick Up a Podcast (2019-) (1 appearance)

Also part of my We Made This network, Pick Up a Podcast sees Kurt North talk to podcasters about podcasting, basically, unpicking their process and their podcast journey.

It was a pleasure to talk my journey over the last 7 years and it leads into me taking turn as host to talk to a few other people soon, so I’ll be on this one again in a different way next time…

2020

16 – We Made This, The X-Cast & Announcements

with Kurt North

Discussing my podcast career and the creation of We Made This.

Shipwrecked & Comatose (2019-) (2 appearances)

Also part of my We Made This network, Shipwrecked & Comatose is produced by Mark Adams & Kurt North and is all about the cult science-fiction sitcom Red Dwarf.

I’ve not really seen much Red Dwarf but I am working through ’90s sitcom, The Brittas Empire, as part of special episodes focusing on Chris Barrie. It’s been a lot of fun to revisit.

2021

49 – The Brittas Empire: Series 1

with Matt Latham

Discussing the first season of the 1990s British sitcom.

56 – The Brittas Empire: Series 2

with Matt Latham

Discussing the second season of the 1990s British sitcom.

Time for Cakes and Ale’s ‘Homebrew’ (2020) (1 appearance)

A similar concept to Don’t Say the ‘C’ Word from the lovely duo Becks & Eeson from the Time for Cakes and Ale podcast, Homebrew talks to artistic people during the Covid-19 lockdown to tap them for insight and inspiration.

I was honoured to be asked to appear discussing podcasting, The X-Cast, fandom and beyond, and it was a real delight to connect with them both…

2020

93 – Homebrew #3

with Becks & Eeson

Discussing podcasting and writing.

The Movie Palace (2018-present) (14 appearances)

The first podcast from Carl Sweeney, who cut his podcasting teeth on The X-Cast, and continues to be a regular producer on that show. The Movie Palace corners a niche rarely seen in film podcasts – the Hollywood studio system, covering films roughly pre-late 1960’s.

It’s a relaxed, erudite and engaging stroll through cinema of old and for someone like me not reared on these movies, a real education.

2018

10 – Singin’ In the Rain

with Carl Sweeney, Earl J. Hess & Prahtiba A. Dabholkar

One originally put together by me for an aborted film podcast. It found a much more suitable home here.

2021

89 – Dr No

with Carl Sweeney

Discussing the first James Bond film from 1962.

The Projection Booth (2011-present) (3 appearances)

For my money, The Projection Booth is the best movie podcast on the web. Mike White, the host, delivers podcasts of incredible length and detail, frequently interviewing people in front of and behind the camera for obscure or lost pictures.

What it sometimes loses in audio quality it more than makes up for in substance, and I am thrilled to be invited to contribute to the show.

2018

368 – Twelve Monkeys

with Mike White & Jedidiah Ayres

Talking about Terry Gilliam’s 1995 film, Twelve Monkeys.

2019

The Tales We Tell (2018-present) (1 appearance)

A podcast I have long admired, The Tales We Tell is an independent show devised by my old Trek FM alumni, Clara Cook, discussing female characters and their representation in fiction.

It’s always a tremendous listen and I was honoured to appear and bring some of my James Bond knowledge to bear.

2020

18 – The Evil Queen of Numbers

with Clara Cook

Talking about the James Bond character of M and female characters in the franchise.

Trek FM’s Standard Orbit (2013-present) (5 appearances)

My introduction to the Trek FM podcast network, Standard Orbit is a fun, enjoyable series dedicated to The Original Series, hosted by Ken Tripp & my friend Zach Moore, who I met via The X-Cast. Had Zach not invited me to guest on his show, there undoubtedly would have been no Primitive Culture, my own show on the network.

This show is always fun to pop up on.

2016

Talking about Destination Star Trek 2016, the show in Birmingham, UK.

300 – The Final Frontier

with Zach Moore & friends

An audio drama reading of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, where I appear as Sean Connery playing Sybok.

Without a Mouse (2019-2020) (2 appearances)

Also part of my We Made This network, Without a Mouse is produced by Tim Henton and my old buddy, Chris Wilson, as they discuss live action Disney movies from across the history of cinema.

It’s a very relaxed, fun podcast which takes the subject matter with an appropriate amount of seriousness, and it’s been a lot of fun to appear on. The podcast ended in August 2020.

2019

28 – The Love Bug

with Tim Henton

Discussing the 1968 Disney debut of Herbie the Volkswagen Beetle.

2020

44 – Herbie Rides Again

with Tim Henton

Discussing the 1973 sequel featuring Herbie.

As of Oct 12, 2021:

1003 podcast episodes produced

Want to invite me onto your podcast, or interested in appearing on one of mine? Give me a shout – always keen, where possible, to meet new podcasters and explore new audio horizons.
